Zusammenfassung

Crocus asturicus Herb. was described by Herbert (1843) as an intermediate plant between C. nudiflorus Sm.,for producing its offsets on runners, and C. serotinus Salisb., for having a bearded throat. The plant came from a seed of C. nudiflorus, collected by Duriaeu in Gijón. Maw (1886) did not find plants with these characteristics in Asturias and assimilated C. asturicus to the C. serotinus thatf/owers during the Asturian autumn. This interpretation, despite contradicting the original description, was followed by almost all subsequent authors. 1n the areas where C. nudiflorus and C. serotinus coexist, plants that conform to the original description of C. asturicus appear and, due to their high pollen sterility, should be considered hybrids between both species. Since the original materials described by Herbert cannot be found, the taxon is neotyped: C. x asturicus Herb.pro sp.
