Resumen
The authors have been studying the possibilities of industrially developing Peruvian diatomite since 1986. In this context, a comparative study of the physico-chemical and mineralogical characteristics of diatomites from Bayóvar, Ocucaje and Ayacucho was carried out, in order to establish their true commercial value. The diatomite from the Bayóvar and Ocucaje deposits must undergo purification before being used to fabricate commercial products, owing to the presence of varying amounts of impurities. The diatomite from Ayacucho has a better quality as it has a high silica content and a low level of contaminants. The latter could be used in elaborating products with a high added value (filter aids for the food and pharmaceutical industry, synthesis of metal silicates).
