Resumen

The church of Santa Maria de Castro Urdiales shows an considerable state of decay, mainly due to alvéolisation, disgregation and groove of the greater part of their façades, moreover the north façade exhibits patinas, plates and vegetation growth. This work investigates both the role of the stone and the surrounding environment in the decay. The more abundant stone is a fine grain sandstone (sublitarenite), of variable colour, from the lower Cretaceous of the Castro Urdiales area. The church is placed on a rocky promontory at the sea side. The stone characteristics and the distributions of different alteration forms around the building, united a the presence of halite efflorescences, suggest a strong influence of the environment on stone decay.
