Abstract

We have studied the abundance of Pb and PAHs in the Villaviciosa estuary record since 1400. Pb concentration rised since 1700, which was accompanied by an increase of PAHs abundance since 1870, with markedly maxima between 1950 a nd 1990. This could be linked to anthropic pollution due to industrial development, mining and vehicle emissions. In fact, PAHs with more than 4 aromatic rings were the most abundant, and some ratios indicated a pyrogenic origin. In the last 20 years there was a decrease in Pb and PAHs concentration, interpreted as the discontinued of leaded gasoline and pollution prevention practices.
