Abstract
This article is a review of the phenotypic and genetic characterization of bentgrass (Agrostis sp. pl.) and fine-leafed fescues (Festuca gr. rubra and F. gr. ovina) accessions from northern Spain. The results of phenotypic and genetic characterization of this plant material are useful to know the potential of some accessions for use in turf breeding. We show the main results of leaf anatomy, floral morphology, agronomic characterization, tolerance to dollar spot fungus by artificial inoculation and genetic characterization by amplified fragment length polymorphism markers (AFLP) in 28 bentgrass, 15 F. rubra and nine F. ovina accessions. We also highlight the selection and multiplication of three A. capillaris, one F. rubra and one F. ovina accessions of interest in creating turfgrass varieties.
