Abstract
Young people are a group of special interest in the Spanish labour market, not only because of the current insertion problems but also due to their potential as a labour force now and in the future. The main aim of this article is to analyse young people’s attitudes towards entrepreneurship, especially their preferences for self-employment as opposed to working for somebody else and the relationship between these preferences and actually finding and developing self-employment. This analysis is mainly based upon the data from study nº 2,938 prepared by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) in 2012 and entitled «Young people’s attitudes towards entrepreneurship». The entrepreneurship activity indicators confirm young people’s low participation, yet also indicate that young people rate this kind of activity highly and are in favour of it. The preference for entrepreneurship is much more widespread than the actual intention to become self-employed; only one in ten young people who state that they prefer it have started to make arrangements to set up a business, have their own businesses or have had them. The results obtained could help to profile in a better way, the policies that support entrepreneurship.
