Résumé

This paper analyzes the effect of intermediate manufacturing offshoring on innovation by firms and whether this effect is maintained irrespective of the governance mode chosen: offshore outsourcing or captive offshoring. For this purpose, data on 1,203 Spanish manufacturing firms from the Encuesta sobre Estrategias Empresariales (ESEE) –Survey on Business Strategies– for the period 2006-2009 are used. The results show a positive relationship between offshored manufacturing of parts and components and product innovation at firm level, and this effect remains positive for both offshoring governance modes.
