Abstract
Fusocellular carcinoma is an infrequent form of squamous cell carcinoma, with an uncertain histogenesis. Although the tumor may arise in any body location, the upper aerodigestive tract is most frequently affected. The majority of lesions located in the oral cavity are invasive and exhibit a poor prognosis. A case of fusocellular carcinoma affecting the masticatory space is described in which the underlying mucosa was found to be free of malignancy. Emphasis is placed on the histological and immunohistological techniques used to establish the diagnosis (i.e., positivity to low molecular weight cytokeratins, with less intense positivity to high molecular weight keratins and vimentin), and on the evaluation of the prognostic factors and therapeutic possibilities of this infrequent neoplasm.
