Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze American reality TV in the 21st century. It initially takes into account the origins of this type of TV programs and its general characteristics, and then moves on to focus on a subset of shows whose script is based on the Cinderella story as conceived by Perrault, the Grimm Brothers and Disney, the so-called «makeover» shows, in which participants —most of them female— undergo a physical transformation (through cosmetic surgery, dieting, changes in their style, etc.) as well as a supposedly psychological metamorphosis (thanks to the intervention of therapists, advisers, etc.). These radical changes mimic the makeover experimented by the fairy-story protagonist, but the shows abound in elements which can be similarly traced back to the marvelous narrative. Thus, the paper analyzes all those similarities, just as it also offers several reasons why reality TV programs are flourishing in the 21st century
