Resumen

Este trabajo contribuye al conocimiento de los motivos que llevan a las pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYMEs) a exportar. Para ello combina aportaciones realizadas desde diferentes campos, analizando la influencia conjunta que las condiciones del mercado doméstico y el éxito competitivo de la empresa ejercen en la decisión de exportación. A partir de una muestra representativa de PYMEs españolas se realizan contrastes econométricos con datos de panel. Los resultados obtenidos en ellos muestran que un elevado nivel de competitividad (a corto y medio plazo) es importante para que una PYME tome la decisión de exportar (o de comprometerse en mayor medida con la exportación) cuando las condiciones del mercado nacional son favorables. Sin embargo, cuando la situación competitiva en dicho mercado es desfavorable, la obtención de unos buenos resultados pierde relevancia como determinante de la decisión de exportación.
