Abstract

Summary. The aim of this study is to verify experimentally, how much implant disparallelism influences the retention of implant- supported overdentures. Material ans Methods. Experimental study, in which five models were made with Straumann's standard implants and spherical Dalbo attachments (Cendrex Metaux), in different situations of disparallelism. Traction forces were applied to the models by means of an electromechanical load device. The results were subject to statistical analysis. Results. Our study suggests that a variation in attachment retention exists which depends on the degree and type of implant disparallelism. The major traction forces necessary for denture desinsertion occurred in the models with buccal-lingual disparellelism. Conclusions. The results are not in agreement with our clinical experience. lt is then necessary to extend the study to other determining factors besides the initial denture retention that include different degrees of retention loss in relation with the various tested disparallelism.
