Abstract

Disabled people are part of our society. However, the lack of information about the number of people involved and where they live makes it difficult to provide them with proper services. This study uses the Geographical Information System to locate the residences of the disabled people in Gijon, a town in Asturias in the North of Spain. ArcView is used to analyze the mismatch between the location of disabled people¿s residences and the proximity of any means of transport and where the highest number of people with disabilities is to be found. This study includes practices that would improve the availability of needed data, promote integration of technology, encourage collaboration among organizations and the public sector (two aspects have proved to be the key to the creation of a successful spatial data infrastructure: institutions that create data and institutions that coordinate and disseminate data) and extend access to geospatial technologies to organizations that would not otherwise benefit from them.
