Abstract
The temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis has been described in 1991 by Dr. Dorrit W Nitzan. Basically the technique consist in a double puncture technique and lavage with Ringer's solution of the superior compartment of the joint space. The primary indications for this procedure are the acute closed lock and the anchored disc phenomenon. Other indications for use the arthrocentesis as a therapeutic procedure are the inflammatory or metabolic osteoarthritis, the pain associated with osteoarthrosis and the traumatic arthritis. The percentage of success in pain reduction and improvement of the mandibular opening is 70-100% when the procedure is used for his primary indications. The advantages of the arthrocentesis are the simplicity of technique, the possibility of make it under local anaesthesia, the no need of sophisticated means, the low cost and the unusual secondary effects and complications.
