Abstract
Traditional electric utilities have turned into large purchasers of natural gas. Long-term contracts and vertical cuasi-integration are normally used as transactional governing devices, complemented with cooperation agreements with third parties. The experience of Unión Fenosa group meets this model. Its natural gas demand has grown in line with its combined-cycle gas turbine investments and its diversification into gas supply. For this reason, the firm has signed two long term contracts with producers. They also imply joint ownership of key infrastructure of the liquefied natural gas chain. Moreover, Unión Fenosa has established a joint-venture with a third partner for developing all its gas business.
