Resumen
M.A.K. Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar plays a relevant role in the field of linguistics nowadays. Its main hypothesis is that language is functional in the sense of motivated by the ways in which it is used. Halliday views language as an instrument for social communication. This article aims to provide an overall analysis of the functional component in Systemic Functional Grammar, focussing mainly on the evolution from use to function of language. In order to come to an assessment of Halliday's stance, a comparison with Chomsky's hypothesis on the subject has been made where considered appropriate.
