Resum

The behaviour of males searching for immature, teneral females is described from a Pyrenean population of Aeshna juncea. Males were seen to hover over aquatic vegetation and to try to grasp emergent females amid vegetation, before the females’ maiden flight. This is interpreted as mate-searching behaviour. Usual mating behaviour was observed in nearby ponds when mature females were present. The consequences on male reproductive success and their dispersal and colonization capacity are commented upon. This occurrence is related to previous reports of immature aeshnid females showing signs of having mated.
