Abstract

The social and employment politics are key pieces of the "Lisbon Agenda", according to which Europe should become by 2010 the most competitive economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth achieving full employment. In this context, the European strategy of employment pursues the achievement of more and better jobs and the equality of opportunities, keeping in mind the territorial dimension of the cohesion politics. Since these initiatives have an outstanding importance at the regional level, in this work we analyze the case of Asturias, examining its perspectives of employment and paying special attention to the insufficient female participation in the labour market and the main role of the services sector. With this aim, we analyze the information provided by the Economically Active Population Survey (EAPS) of the INE, describing the main characteristics of the regional employment in Asturias and defining future scenarios according to sector and gender perspectives. The results lead to some interesting conclusions, since it is found that, in the optimistic scenario, Asturias would be able to reach the European objectives of employment, both for the total population (employment rate of 70%) and for the female collective (rate of 60%).
