Resumo

This doctoral thesis focuses on the industrial economy and air transport and refers, on the one hand and theoretically, to the liberalization process in the air transport as a whole and to the market structure in Spain and, on the other hand, in an empirical way, presents an accurate assessment about how airlines compete in prices, quantities and quality to attract consumers - whether business or leisure - in the Spanish market. The results obtained are also compared with those of the Scandinavian market. Similarly, the degree of efficiency -through a DEA analysis- of the 21 largest European airports is analyzed. Other aspects that are analyzed in this doctoral thesis have to do with the impact that high-speed rail lines is provoking on air transport and the impact that tourism arriving by air has on an economy highly dependent on this sector such as the Canary Islands.
