Abstract

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) are a set of techniques emerged as potential solutions to face the most important urban problems related to the management of urban runoff. The research performed in this PhD thesis has been focused on giving answers to important questions related to the hydrological performance of permeable pavements and sustainable linear drainage systems, both at laboratory and on the field. The obtained results allowed to quantify significant improvements in the runoff management in relation to conventional drainage systems, both in term of water quality and water quantity. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the characteristics and nature of the used materials in the studied techniques substantially affects their hydraulic capacity and depuration effectiveness, indicating a great potential of development of these systems.
