Abstract
In today's society, the search for more sustainable cities is causing Public Administrations, companies and international organizations to study the current processes of urban growth. The study area of this article is the city of Mérida, the main objective of this research is to know in depth the main urban weaknesses, in order to propose strategic lines that serve as support for the development of its Sustainable and integrated Urban Development Strategy as to support its monitoring and evaluation. Therefore, the use of geographic information systems are presented as essential instruments in sustainable urban planning, as they function as a database with geographic information (alphanumeric data) that is associated by a common identifier (census sections) allowing to analyze the correspondence between different variables, as well as an exhaustive knowledge of the city and its functioning.
