Abstract

The survival of charred plant fragments in the solum of two Neolithic burial mounds allowed their identification as corresponding to oak and hazelnut trees. The probable chronology of both monuments points to 4000 B.C. as the ante quem moment for the original trees. The concordance of these results with other carpological and palynological results from the same period outlines the domain of the Atlantic forest during the implantation of the Neolithic way of life in the central maritime sector of Asturias. Complementarily, the diverse economic potential that both botanical resources offered to the primitive agricultural communities of the area is considered.
