Abstract

Introduction: within their educational offer, students in the second year of Up-per Secondary school in Extremadura can take the subject Physical Activity and Health (PA&H), with a teaching load of four hours per week. Objective: The aim was to analyse the number of students who would choose to take this subject during the first year in which it was introduced, as well as its distribution by gender, Upper Secondary school mode and out-of-school physical activity (PA) practice. The influ-ence of the grade obtained in Physical Education (PE), the perception of the moti-vational climate generated by the teacher and the satisfaction of basic psy-chological needs (BPN) during the previous aca-demic year were also eval-uated. Methodology: 1494 stu-dents (839 girls) from 31 schools in Extremadura participated. Frequency analysis, contingency ta-bles and binary logistic regression analysis were carried out. Results: 39.1% of the stu-dents selected this optional subject and the Social Sciences and Humanities modality obtained a higher proportion of enrolments. There were significant differences according to gender, confirming the influence of the grade obtained the previous year in PE and extracurricular PA. Perceived classroom climate and satisfaction with their NPB during the previous year also affected the decision. Discussion: There were gender differences, in contrast to other studies. In addition, other personal factors and teaching be-haviour as a contextual factor explain the reasons why students choose to take this subject. Conclusions: Gender dif-ferences have to be con-sidered, in addition to the influence of motivational variables relating to the previous year on this choice.
