Abstract
Floating breakwaters attenuate incident waves and ensure safe port operations for vessels in locations with mild wave conditions. The collapse of these structures is associated with failures in the connections between pontoons, especially when they are subjected to adverse environmental conditions. An example of this is the floating pontoon in the Port of Figueras (Asturias, Spain), where its connections are not able to withstand the forces caused by storm waves. In this work, a parabolic floating pontoon with same characteristics interacting with waves has been simulated by means of a numerical model based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM). The time series of bending moments and axial forces at the connections were obtained and, additionally, the synergy of the floating pontoon with wave energy technology is explored in terms of production and structural integrity.
