Abstract

The most extensive and best conserved fluvial tide plain of the Ribadesella is found on its left bank. In the mid-twentieth century, a dyke was raised in its northen-most end in order to drain a vast area of the marsh and thus increase its farming capacity. This structure together with other alterations carried out in the eighties substantially modified the dynamics and morphology of the land limited by the dyke. The aim of this work is to identify the natural extension of the marsh prior to these constructions. A methodology was created to identify the drained area for farming use in the Ribadesella estuary, based on an updated surface morphological map and on the analysis of aerial photographs from 1956 onwards.
