Resumen
Public opinion confidence in major state institutions has dropped in Spain in the years of the economic crisis. From 2008 and on, citizen satisfaction with the functioning of democracy and its main institutional compounds has experienced a notable erosion. Political parties and other private interest groups with participation in public policy formulation, namely trade unions, have been negatively affected by loss of public esteem and decreased legitimacy. The contribution examines recent trends in public opinion on trade unions in Spain. We use data from the CIS barometer surveys to elaborate a descriptive analysis of citizen attitudes towards trade union organizations in the period from 2003 to 2015. The research covers a gap in the literature on public opinion and social legitimacy of trade unions in Spain. This is a relevant although rather unexplored research area for the study of trade union power resources and revitalization strategies.
